How do bacteria spread?

Follow us to find out.

What are bacteria?

Bacteria are single-celled, microscopic organisms that exist in different forms (e.g. spheres, rods, spirals).

Despite stereotypes, bacteria can be:

  • Whether they are beneficial: They may help digestion (e.g. intestinal flora) or nitrogen fixation in the soil.
  • Pathogens: Some bacteria can cause diseases such as pneumonia, infections or food poisoning.

How do they get into our bodies?

Bacteria multiply rapidly by division and need a suitable environment (e.g. nutrients, temperature) to survive.

Bacteria can spread in different ways:

  1. Direct contact: If an infected person has skin-to-skin contact with another person, the bacteria can be transferred.
  2. Droplet infection: When coughing, sneezing or talking, bacteria can be released into the air and infect others.
  3. Infected surfaces: If someone touches a surface contaminated with bacteria and then touches their face, they can become infected.
  4. Food, drinks: If the bacteria are present in food or drink, they can be spread by ingestion.

How do we defend against them?

  1. Hand washing: Regular handwashing with soap and water helps to remove bacteria that can enter the body from hand to mouth or from infected surfaces.
  2. Disinfection: Use disinfectants to kill bacteria, especially on frequently touched surfaces such as door handles, tables, telephones and bathrooms. As cleaners, we use them regularly in our work.
  3. Hygienic meals: Keep dining areas clean, wash food thoroughly and ensure it is stored at the right temperature.
  4. Regular cleaning: Thorough cleaning helps remove bacteria from surfaces and equipment. If you don't have time, hire professional cleaners to do the job for you.

Why is it good to have a cleaning company do the work?

  1. Expertise and efficiency: Cleaning company professionals are well versed in the disinfectants and cleaning methods needed to control various bacteria. Professional cleaning is faster and more thorough than trying to do it yourself.
  2. Regularity: The cleaning company will ensure that common areas and surfaces are cleaned regularly and thoroughly to minimise the build-up of bacteria.
  3. Saving time: Residents do not have to clean the common areas themselves, leaving more time for other tasks, while being assured that the premises remain clean and germ-free.
  4. Maintaining hygiene: Cleaning companies pay particular attention to disinfection, reducing the chance of spreading bacteria and other pathogens.
